software and culture – another brief exam prep distraction

The choices we make when we’re not choosing to choose and the things we think when we don’t think we are thinking are strongly driven by culture and are important indicators of the nature of that culture.

One of the things that I am keenly aware of is that as various bits of software become embedded in our lives individually – and particularly corporately – and become part of the air we breath (and I use that image deliberately because breathing very quickly becomes non-optional even when the air is bad) they become like language and culture in that they shape our choices to the extent that we end up making profound choices without even recognising that a choice was there to be made.

More on this at another time!
